all 14 →How to convert Word to EPUB
- Format chapter titles in Word with the Heading 1 style, and sections with Heading 2.
- Drop the .docx file onto the box above, or click it to pick it. OpenDocument, RTF and plain text manuscripts work too.
- Check the preview, then download the .epub file.
What ends up in the EPUB
An EPUB 3 book with a chapter for each Heading 1, a navigable table of contents, the title and language set in the metadata, and your images, footnotes, lists, tables and links. Bold, italic and other inline formatting are kept. Word page layout, such as page breaks, headers, footers and exact fonts, does not carry over, because ebooks reflow to fit each reader's screen and font settings.
Sending it to a Kindle
Amazon's Send to Kindle accepts EPUB and converts it for your device, so this file is all a Kindle needs. For copying over USB, the Ebook Converter can also make a Kindle AZW3 file.
Kobo readers
Kobo opens EPUB, but books in Kobo's own KEPUB format turn pages faster and show reading statistics. Convert the EPUB with EPUB to KEPUB before copying it over.
From a plain text file
Plain text manuscripts also work: lines like "Chapter 1" or "PART TWO" become chapters, paragraphs wrapped at a fixed width are joined again, and the text encoding is detected automatically.
Is my manuscript uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in this page with open-source engines compiled to WebAssembly. The engine downloads once the first time you convert and your browser caches it. Your files never leave your device, and there is no account or file-size quota.
Why does my EPUB have only one chapter?
Chapters are made from Word's Heading 1 style. If your chapter titles are just bold text, apply Heading 1 to them in Word and convert again.
Is the EPUB good enough to publish?
The file is a standard EPUB 3 with a table of contents and metadata. Stores have their own checks, so run it through the store's previewer before you publish.
