How to convert DOCX to Markdown

1. Drop your .docx files onto the box above, or click it to pick them. Old .doc, .odt and .rtf files work too.

What you get

GitHub-flavoured Markdown: # headings from Word's Heading styles, **bold** and *italic*, numbered and bulleted lists with their nesting, links, footnotes and pipe tables. Images are extracted at their original quality, not re-compressed.

Tables

Simple tables become Markdown pipe tables. A table with lists, several paragraphs or merged cells inside a cell cannot be written as a pipe table, so it stays as an HTML table in the .md file. GitHub, Obsidian and most static site generators render those correctly, and nothing is silently lost.

Getting clean headings

Markdown headings come from Word's built-in Heading 1, Heading 2 and other heading styles. Text that only looks like a heading, because it is bold or large, stays a normal paragraph. If the structure comes out flat, apply the heading styles in Word and convert again.

Old .doc files

Word 97-2003 .doc files are read by our own text reader, which recovers the text, headings and tables but not formatting or images. For a full conversion, save the file as .docx in Word or LibreOffice first.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in this page with open-source engines compiled to WebAssembly. The engine downloads once the first time you convert and your browser caches it. Your files never leave your device, and there is no account or file-size quota. The engine is Pandoc 3.13.

Which Markdown flavour is it?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown (GFM), which also works in Obsidian, Notion imports, VS Code, Hugo, Jekyll, Astro and most other tools.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Drop as many files as you like; each converts on its own and Download all gives you one ZIP with every .md file and its images.
