What converts to what
| From | Kept |
|---|---|
| Word .docx, OpenDocument .odt, EPUB | Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, lists, tables, footnotes, links and images |
| Rich Text .rtf | Text, formatting, tables, links and images; footnotes in RTF are often lost |
| Old Word 97-2003 .doc | Text, headings and tables only; no formatting or images |
| FictionBook .fb2 and .fbz | Chapters, emphasis, notes and images |
| Plain text .txt | Paragraphs, with chapter headings detected from lines like "Chapter 1" or "PART TWO" |
| HTML and Markdown | Everything the format can express |
Converting to PDF
The PDF is typeset fresh from the document's content with the katlab Markdown to PDF engine: clean typography, page numbers, clickable links and bookmarks for headings. It is not a copy of the original page layout. Headers, footers, columns, text boxes and exact fonts are not reproduced. When you need the original layout, Word's or LibreOffice's own Save as PDF is the right tool.
Making an e-book
Choose EPUB e-book to turn a manuscript, a Word document or a plain text file into an EPUB 3 book with a table of contents built from its headings. For everything about ebooks, such as FictionBook, plain-text books and Kindle and Kobo tips, use the dedicated Ebook Converter.
Converting to Markdown
You get GitHub-flavoured Markdown that works in GitHub, Obsidian, Notion imports and static site generators. Images are saved in a media folder inside a ZIP next to the .md file, or embedded in the Markdown as data if you want a single file. Tables with lists or several paragraphs in a cell stay as HTML tables, because plain Markdown tables cannot hold them.
Old .doc files
Word 97-2003 files use a binary format that no small browser engine can fully read. The converter has its own reader for them that recovers the text, headings and tables, and it says so on every .doc result. For full fidelity, open the file in Word or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, and convert that.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The converter is Pandoc 3.13 compiled to WebAssembly, running in this page. It downloads once (about 13 MB) the first time you convert, and your browser caches it. Your files never leave your device. The converter's source is published under the GNU GPL.
Not supported
Apple Pages, WordPerfect and Microsoft Works files can't be read; export them to .docx from their own app first. Password-protected documents need the password removed in Word first. Spreadsheets and presentations are not text documents; see the related tools below.
