Remove metadata from PDF & Office files
See what a PDF, Word, Excel or PowerPoint file reveals about you, such as the author, company, comment authors, editing time and the GPS location of photos inside, and save a clean copy. The content is not changed. Nothing is uploaded.
What gets removed
PDF files
- Document properties: author, title, subject, keywords, the app that created it, and the creation and modification dates.
- XMP metadata, the hidden XML block many apps add, often with your name, software versions and document IDs, also on single pages and images.
- Names of comment authors, and private editing data that apps like Illustrator and Acrobat store (PieceInfo).
- Camera data and GPS location of photos placed in the PDF.
- Earlier saved versions: a PDF that was edited and saved again often still holds the previous versions, including text you deleted. The cleaned file contains only the current version.
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files
- Author, last saved by, company, manager, template, total editing time, revision number and dates.
- Custom properties, often added by document management systems.
- The preview thumbnail, which can show content from before the last edit.
- Names and account IDs of comment and tracked-change authors, replaced with "Author". The comments and changes themselves stay.
- Word's revision session IDs, which can link documents edited in the same sessions.
- Camera data and GPS location of inserted photos; the picture and its rotation are kept.
What it does not change
The visible content: text, comments, tracked changes, hidden text, speaker notes, hidden sheets and attached files. If you want those gone, delete them in the app first. Password-protected files must be unlocked first, and old .doc, .xls and .ppt files need saving in the new format.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. Each file is read, cleaned and checked again in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.
How do I know the metadata is really gone?
After cleaning, the new file is read again from scratch with the same checks, and the result is shown next to the save button. If anything were left, it would be listed there.
Will the document still open normally?
Yes. Only properties and hidden data are removed or replaced; the document structure and content are kept, so it opens in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, LibreOffice, Google Docs and every PDF reader.
Does it work with Office's own Document Inspector?
It removes the same kind of personal information that Document Inspector's "Document Properties and Personal Information" check finds, without needing Office, and it also cleans the photos inside and Word's revision IDs.
