How to convert RAR to ZIP online

  1. Drop the .rar file onto the box above. For a split set (.part1.rar, .part2.rar…) drop all the parts at once.
  2. If the archive is password-protected, type the password when asked. The files are then repacked into a ZIP on your device.
  3. The .zip downloads when it is ready. The file browser stays open in case you only wanted a few files.

When a RAR needs to become a ZIP

RAR is a common format for downloads, but few devices open it without extra software, and many upload forms, learning platforms and mail filters accept ZIP only. If the person you are sending files to replies that they cannot open the attachment, or a website rejects your .rar, converting it to ZIP is the quickest fix.

ZIP opens with the tools already built into Windows, macOS, Linux desktops, Android and iOS, so the recipient does not need to install anything.

What is converted, and what is not

Both RAR generations are read: RAR4 and RAR5, including solid archives, archives with encrypted file names, multi-volume sets and self-extracting .exe files made from a RAR. The folder structure and file names are kept.

The resulting ZIP is not encrypted, even when the RAR was. If the contents are sensitive, extract the files and pack them into an encrypted archive on the Zip & Unzip page. Unix permissions and symbolic links stored in the RAR are not carried over.

Why there is no ZIP to RAR

The RAR format is proprietary, and only its owner’s software is allowed to create RAR files. This site can read them but will never write them. If you need better compression than ZIP, convert to 7z instead: it is an open format with similar strengths.

How long does it take?

The work is done by your own device, so there is no upload to wait for, but a large archive takes as long as your processor needs to decompress it and compress it again. A solid RAR also has to be unpacked from its very beginning, whatever it contains. Small archives are done quickly; a multi-gigabyte one can keep your device busy for a while. A progress bar with a cancel button is shown throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Is my RAR file uploaded for conversion?

No. The RAR is read and the ZIP is written inside your browser with WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page keeps working if you go offline after it has loaded.

Can it convert a password-protected RAR?

Yes, if you know the password. You are asked for it before the conversion starts. The ZIP that comes out is not encrypted, so anyone who gets the file can open it.

How do I convert a multi-part RAR?

Drop every volume together: all the .part1.rar, .part2.rar files, or the .rar with its .r00, .r01 companions. If a part is missing, the tool names the missing file and only the complete files can be converted.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed cap. The archive is read from your disk in pieces and the output is written to your browser’s temporary storage, so the practical limit is free disk space. Some private-browsing modes have no such storage and fall back to memory, where large archives may fail.

Can I convert ZIP to RAR here?

No. RAR files cannot be created by this or any other open tool because the format is proprietary. ZIP to 7z is available as an alternative.
