Convert 7z to ZIP Online
Drop a .7z archive and download its contents as a .zip — no 7-Zip install, no upload.
How to convert 7z to ZIP online
- Drop the
.7zfile onto the box above, or click to choose it. For volumes (.7z.001,.7z.002…) select all of them. - Enter the password if the archive has one. The contents are unpacked and compressed again as a ZIP on your device.
- Save the
.zipwhen the download appears, or use the file list to take out single files instead.
Why convert 7z to ZIP?
7z compresses well, which is why people use it, but opening one needs a program the recipient may not have or may not be allowed to install: a managed work laptop, a school Chromebook, a phone. ZIP is understood by every mainstream operating system out of the box.
Converting is also the answer when a submission portal, a ticketing system or an email gateway lists ZIP as the only archive type it accepts.
Which 7z archives can be converted?
Archives made by 7-Zip with its standard methods are supported: LZMA, LZMA2, PPMd and BZip2, solid or not, with AES-256 encryption and with encrypted file names. The reading is done by 7-Zip itself, compiled to WebAssembly.
One case is not supported: 7z files written by modified 7-Zip builds using the non-standard Zstandard, Brotli or LZ4 codecs. For those, the tool reports that the method is unsupported.
Expect a larger file and no password
ZIP’s Deflate compression is weaker than LZMA, and ZIP compresses each file separately while 7z usually compresses them as one solid block. A ZIP made from a 7z is therefore often noticeably bigger, especially for folders full of similar text files.
The converted ZIP is not encrypted. Unix permissions and symbolic links are not carried over either. Conversion speed depends on your device: a solid 7z has to be decompressed from the beginning, so a multi-gigabyte archive takes a while.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need 7-Zip installed to convert a 7z file?
No. The page includes the 7-Zip engine compiled to WebAssembly, so the archive is read directly in your browser.
Will the ZIP be the same size as the 7z?
Usually not. 7z generally compresses tighter than ZIP, so the ZIP tends to be larger. Files that are already compressed, such as photos, video and PDFs, come out at about the same size.
Can it convert an encrypted 7z?
Yes. Archives protected with AES-256, including those that hide their file names, open once you type the password. The ZIP that is produced has no password.
Why does it say the compression method is unsupported?
The archive was probably created by a 7-Zip variant using Zstandard, Brotli or LZ4 inside the 7z container. Those codecs are not part of the standard format and are not supported here.
Is the 7z file uploaded?
No. Reading and repacking both happen locally in your browser tab. Nothing is transferred, and no account is needed.
