How to work out your profit on a sale
Pick your marketplace to load its typical fees, or choose Custom.
Enter your sale price, any shipping you charge the buyer, what the item cost you, your actual postage and any other costs.
Adjust the fee fields if your category or plan differs. Your net profit, margin and return update instantly.
How marketplace fees usually work
Most selling platforms take a cut in up to three parts: a marketplace fee (a percentage of what the buyer pays), a payment processing fee (another percentage, sometimes bundled into the first), and a fixed fee per order or per listing. Many platforms charge their percentage on the total the buyer pays — including the shipping you charge — which is why the shipping toggle matters.
Which figures does each preset use?
eBay — a final value fee on the order total plus a small per-order fee. Payment processing is bundled into that percentage.
Etsy — a transaction fee, a separate payment processing percentage and fixed fee, and a small per-listing fee.
Depop — no marketplace selling fee on US sales; you mainly pay payment processing.
Mercari — a selling fee plus payment processing.
Poshmark — a flat fee on small orders and a percentage above a threshold; the preset uses the percentage, so check small orders manually.
Vinted — the buyer pays the buyer-protection fee, so the seller typically keeps the full price.
Margin vs. return on cost
Profit margin is your net profit as a percentage of what the buyer pays — useful for comparing sales of different sizes. Return on cost is your net profit divided by what you spent (item, shipping and other costs) — useful when you buy to resell. The break-even price is the sale price at which profit would be zero, given your current costs and fees.
