How to extract files from a WIM image

  1. Drop the .wim file onto the box above, or click to choose it.
  2. Browse the Windows folder tree or search for the file by name.
  3. Download the file, or tick several and download them together.

What a WIM file is

WIM is the Windows Imaging Format: a file-based image of a Windows installation. The best-known examples sit in the sources folder of Windows install media, where install.wim holds the operating system and boot.wim holds the setup environment. Deployment teams also capture their own WIMs of configured machines.

The official way in is to apply or attach the image with DISM from an elevated command prompt on Windows. That is a lot of ceremony for the most common request, which is one original system file: a DLL to replace a damaged one, a driver, a default font, a stock wallpaper.

Getting one file out of a multi-gigabyte image

The image is read from your disk in pieces. The listing comes first, and file data is only read when you preview or download something, so fetching one file from a large install.wim does not involve unpacking the rest.

If your WIM is still inside a Windows ISO, open the ISO with the ISO extractor, go to sources and download the WIM from there, then drop it here.

Limits

.esd files, the more tightly compressed relative of WIM used by some Windows downloads, are not supported here. The tool is read-only: it cannot add files to an image, apply an image to a disk or make anything bootable. Your image is processed on your own machine and no part of it is transmitted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open install.wim without DISM?

Yes. Drop the file here and browse it like a folder. No command prompt and no administrator rights are involved.

Does it open .esd files?

No. ESD files are not supported. Only .wim images are.

Can I extract a single DLL or driver from a Windows image?

Yes. Search for the file name, then download it. Only that file is read from the image.

Is there a size limit for WIM files?

No fixed cap. The image is read in pieces, not loaded into memory. Extracted files need free space in the browser’s temporary storage, which is normally a share of your free disk space.

Can it modify a WIM or apply it to a drive?

No. It reads files out of the image. Editing, capturing and applying images are jobs for Windows deployment tools.
