Extract .dmg Files Online

Open an Apple .dmg disk image on Windows, Linux or a Chromebook and copy out what is inside. It reads the files; it does not mount the image or install anything.

Files are processed locally. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

How to open a DMG file without a Mac

  1. Drop the .dmg file onto the box above, or click to choose it.
  2. Open the volume and browse its folders. A Mac application shows up as a folder whose name ends in .app.
  3. Download the files you need one by one, tick several to get them as one archive, or save the whole tree to a folder.

Why a DMG will not open on Windows, Linux or ChromeOS

A DMG is a disk image made by macOS: a compressed copy of a small Mac-formatted volume. It is how most Mac software is distributed, and it is also what you get when someone on a Mac packs photos, documents or a project into a disk image and sends it over.

Other operating systems have no built-in reader for the container or for the HFS+ and APFS file systems inside it, so double-clicking the file does nothing useful. This page reads both layers in the browser and shows you the folder tree, so you can take the files out on whatever computer you have.

What it can and cannot do with a DMG

Keep in mind what the files are. A Mac application copied out of a DMG is still a Mac application and will not run on Windows or Linux. The tool is useful when you want what is inside it or next to it: documents, images, fonts, a firmware file, a licence text, an icon.

The image stays on your computer

The DMG is read from your disk in pieces and is never sent to a server, so a multi-gigabyte image does not need to be uploaded anywhere. Files you extract are written to the browser’s temporary storage and handed over as normal downloads; in Chrome and Edge you can save a whole folder tree straight into a directory you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a DMG file on Windows?

Yes. Drop it on this page in a current desktop browser. The image is read in the browser, so it works the same on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS, with nothing to install.

Can it install the Mac app inside the DMG?

No. It copies files out of the image. It cannot install or run anything, and a Mac application extracted this way still only runs on macOS.

Does it open encrypted or password-protected DMGs?

No. Encrypted disk images are not supported. You would need to open the image on a Mac and copy the files into a plain archive there.

Does it mount the DMG as a drive?

No. Nothing is mounted. The tool parses the image and lists the files, and you download the ones you want.

How large a DMG can it handle?

There is no fixed cap. The image is read in pieces rather than loaded into memory. What you extract needs free space in the browser’s temporary storage, which is normally a share of your free disk space.
