Convert DMG to ZIP Online
Drop a Mac .dmg disk image and get its files as a .zip that opens on Windows, Linux or a Chromebook. No Mac needed.
How to convert a DMG to ZIP online
- Drop the
.dmgfile onto the box above, or click to choose it. - The volume inside the image is read and its files are packed into a ZIP on your device.
- Save the
.zipwhen it downloads. Open it with the archive tool built into your computer.
Why convert a DMG to ZIP?
A DMG is a Mac disk image, and only macOS opens it out of the box. If a Mac user sent you photos, documents or a project as a .dmg, or you downloaded one and only want what is inside, converting it to ZIP gives you an archive Windows, Linux, ChromeOS and phones all understand.
Which DMG files work
- Works: images holding an HFS+ or APFS volume, compressed with zlib (UDZO), LZFSE (ULFO), bzip2 (UDBZ) or LZMA (ULMO), or uncompressed (UDRO). Each type was tested and checked byte for byte.
- Not supported: encrypted, password-protected DMGs. The tool tells you when it sees one. Open those on a Mac and copy the files out there.
macOS file names are normalised to the standard Unicode form in the ZIP, so names with accents look and sort correctly on Windows. Mac metadata such as download quarantine flags and Finder information is left out, as are hidden system folders like .fseventsd. A Mac application converted this way is still a Mac application and will not run on Windows or Linux.
The image never leaves your computer
The DMG is read from your disk in pieces and the ZIP is written to the browser’s temporary storage, so a large image does not need to be uploaded or loaded into memory.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a DMG to ZIP on Windows?
Yes. Drop it on this page in a current desktop browser. It works the same on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS, with nothing to install.
Is the DMG uploaded?
No. The image is read and the ZIP is written in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does it work with encrypted DMGs?
No. Password-protected disk images cannot be read here, even with the correct password. Open them on a Mac and copy the files into a ZIP there.
Will the Mac app inside run on Windows after converting?
No. Converting only changes the container. A Mac application still needs macOS. Documents, images, fonts and other files can be used anywhere.
How large a DMG can it convert?
There is no fixed cap. The image is read in pieces and the ZIP goes to the browser’s temporary storage, so the limit is free disk space.
