Edit a ZIP File Online
Open a .zip, remove what should not be there, rename or add files, and save a new archive — without unpacking everything first.
Set a password to lock the archive with AES-256 encryption. Leave blank for a normal ZIP.
How to edit a ZIP file online
- Drop a single
.ziponto the box above. It opens for editing straight away and its contents appear in the list. - Remove files you do not want, rename or drag files to another folder, and drop in new files or folders to add them.
- Click Save edited ZIP and download the new archive.
Change a ZIP without unpacking it
The usual way to fix an archive is to extract everything, change one thing and zip it all up again. That is slow for a big ZIP and easy to get wrong. Here you edit the contents list directly: delete the file that was included by mistake, correct a file name, add the document that was forgotten, move things into a new folder.
It suits the small corrections that come up before sending or uploading an archive: taking out a draft, replacing a file with a newer version, or trimming a download to the parts someone needs.
Untouched files are copied without recompressing
Every file you leave alone is copied into the new ZIP exactly as it is stored in the old one. It is not decompressed and compressed again. Saving is therefore fast even for a large archive, and those files keep their original compression.
Only the files you add are compressed fresh.
Your original file is never modified
The file you drop is only ever read. Saving always produces a new ZIP that you download. The original stays on your disk unchanged, so if an edit goes wrong you still have it.
Password-protected ZIPs can be edited too: you can remove files and add new ones, and the existing encrypted entries stay encrypted. Encrypted entries cannot be renamed or moved.
Clean __MACOSX and .DS_Store out of a ZIP
ZIPs created on a Mac usually carry a __MACOSX folder and .DS_Store files, which show up as clutter on Windows and can confuse automated upload checks. Open the ZIP here with Strip hidden system files ticked, which it is by default, and save. The new archive comes out without them, and without Windows leftovers such as Thumbs.db.
Frequently asked questions
Does editing change my original ZIP file?
No. The file on your disk is only read. You always download a new ZIP with your changes, and the original is left exactly as it was.
Is the whole archive recompressed when I save?
No. Files you did not touch are copied as they are, without being decompressed and recompressed. Only newly added files are compressed.
Can I edit a password-protected ZIP?
Partly. You can remove files and add new ones, and the entries that were already encrypted stay encrypted. Renaming or moving an encrypted entry is not possible.
Can I edit a RAR or 7z archive the same way?
No. Editing in place works for ZIP only. For other formats, extract the files with the archive extractor and create a new archive from them.
Is the ZIP uploaded while I edit it?
No. The archive is opened and rewritten inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and no account is needed.
