When a ZIPX needs to become a ZIP
WinZip saves .zipx archives with compression methods that the archive tools built into Windows and macOS do not understand. If you send one to someone without WinZip or 7-Zip, they see an error or an empty folder. Upload forms that accept ZIP often reject .zipx for the same reason.
Converting rewrites every file with classic Deflate compression, the method every ZIP reader supports. The folder structure and file names are kept.
What to expect
The ZIP is usually somewhat larger than the ZIPX, because Deflate compresses less tightly than LZMA or PPMd. Photos, video and other already-compressed files come out at about the same size.
The ZIP that comes out is not encrypted, even when the ZIPX was. To protect it again, extract the files and pack them on the Zip & Unzip page with a password. Entries that use WinZip’s special JPEG or WAV recompression cannot be decoded and are left out, with a note saying how many.
Frequently asked questions
Is my ZIPX uploaded for conversion?
No. Reading and repacking both happen in your browser tab with WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to a server.
Will the ZIP open on Windows without extra software?
Yes. The output uses standard Deflate compression, which Windows Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, Linux desktops, Android and iOS all open.
Can it convert a password-protected ZIPX?
Yes, if you know the password. The converted ZIP has no password.
Why is the ZIP bigger than the ZIPX?
ZIPX uses stronger compression than standard ZIP. The trade-off for opening everywhere is a somewhat larger file, mostly for text and documents.
Is there a size limit?
There is no fixed cap. The archive is read from your disk in pieces and the output is written to your browser’s temporary storage, so the practical limit is free disk space.
