How to compare two PDFs
- Drop the original on the left and the changed version on the right. If you mix them up, the tool notices from the save dates and swaps them.
- The comparison starts by itself. Added words are green, removed words red; click a change in the list to jump to it on both pages.
- Download a highlighted PDF report or a CSV list of all changes.
Built for real documents
Two-column layouts, tables and text boxes are read in the order a person reads them, not the order the PDF happens to store them. Running headers, footers and page numbers, which shift on every page after an insertion, are recognised and left out. Inserted and removed pages are detected. Words split across lines with a hyphen, ligatures like fi, curly versus straight quotes and different spacing don't show up as changes.
Many differences hide outside the page text: filled-in form fields, comments and stamps, and document properties such as author, dates and the program that made the file. Those are compared too and listed separately.
Earlier versions inside one PDF
When a PDF is signed, filled in, commented or edited in many programs, the change is appended to the end of the file and the previous version stays inside it. Open the file under "Earlier versions" to see how many times it was saved, when and with which program, download any earlier version, or compare it with the current one. That is normal behaviour, not proof of tampering, but it does show exactly what changed after a given save, including text that was later removed.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't page numbers and headers show up as changes?
Lines that repeat at the same place on most pages are treated as page furniture and left out, so you only see real edits.
Can it compare scanned PDFs?
Scans contain pictures, not text. Use the overlay view: the original is drawn in red, the changed version in cyan, and differences stand out.
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Both files are compared in your browser tab, and there is no size limit.
